The Arthur Murray System of Teaching

Through almost a century of teaching the world to dance, Arthur Murray Dance Schools have found that students learn most quickly and effectively on a scholastic basis focused on three fundamental areas:

  • Knowledge
  • Repetition
  • Application

At Arthur Murray, you learn to dance through private lessons, group classes and extremely important practice sessions/parties. We target each of the three fundamental areas and help people from all walks of life become confident dancers on any dance floor at any social event.

Due to the effectiveness of this system, students are able to learn the most popular dances in a short period of time.

With us, learning to dance also becomes much more fun! Given time, anyone can learn to dance the Arthur Murray way!

Private Lessons
The cornerstone of the Arthur Murray Method

Session focus: Knowledge
Session length: 45 minutes

During a student's one-on-one private lesson, they will receive personalized instruction that will comfortably guide them through learning and applying the information. The instructor will spend the time necessary on their technique in lead/follow, footwork, styling and general dance improvement. This is the power of a private lesson! An up-to-date record of everything the student has accomplished on the lesson will be kept as part of their instruction progress.

Group Classes
The perfect compliment to your private lessons

Session focus: Repetition (foot patterns)
Session length: 45 minutes

Group classes are an important supplement to a student's private instruction. Group classes allow students the opportunity to refine the dance patterns they know while being introduced to new variation patterns in their dance level. In our group classes, additional emphasis is put on self improvement (practicing your own foot work) through the repetition of patterns as well as experiencing "leading and following" with a variety of partners.

During our group classes you will meet other students in the studio and feel much more comfortable when attending your first practice session/party.

Practice Sessions
Social practice in a fun environment

Session focus: Application
Session length: 1 hour 30 minutes

Since learning to dance requires muscle memory (not brain memory) which is attained through use and repetition, the Arthur Murray system provides an opportunity for students to practice their learned material right at the studio. This is an important practical part of your dance program. Practice refines your leading/following skills, improves your maneuverability on the crowded dance floor and allows you to gain confidence to dance with any partner to the rhythm of any music.

The studio holds scheduled dance parties (practice sessions) for all of our students. These practice parties are held on a weekly basis. Students have fun dancing with the instructors and other students in a relaxed, supportive and nurturing environment.

Our parties are for Arthur Murray students only — so you can feel safe and comfortable spending your evening with us! We always play a wide-variety of music that students can easily dance to. All teachers participate at these sessions and assist new students in getting comfortable on the dance floor. Practice parties provide the perfect opportunity to practice what you've learned in a realistic social atmosphere. And, just like all the weddings and parties you'll be attending, you never know when we might throw in a Conga Line, Line Dance, Mixer or special exhibition!
